Gel Printing on Easter Eggs

by Crafts / DIY

Bring out the mixed-media tools and get ready to print some wooden eggs with style! This tutorial for gel printing on Easter eggs uses a Gelli plate and paint to create playful, mixed-media patterns on your wooden eggs.

Supplies (contains affiliate links):

Step 1: Paint an egg a solid, pastel color.
Although it probably would have been smarter to paint the eggs with a brush beforehand, I already had a thick layer of paint on the gel plate from a first (failed) attempt, so I just rolled the egg around in it to thoroughly coat the wooden egg.

Step 2: Sponge paint through a stencil onto the gel plate.
You should use a moderately thick coat of paint. The less paint you use, the more likely that the wood will absorb some of the pattern’s vibrancy.

Step 3: Roll the egg through the stenciled design to print it onto the egg.
This requires an extremely steady hand, and it’s where my eggs went wrong. Gel plates are very slippery when they are covered in paint, so you really have to steady the egg, then roll it across.

Step 4: Decorate with paint pens, paint, and markers.
The rest is really up to you. Have fun with it!
