Is there anything better than sharing art? I just had the privilege of working on a collaborative art journal project with Tina Walker, Andrea Chebeleu, and Jamie Dougherty, and it was amazing! I was able to work with artists whose work I admired and I learned so much from the experience. With the finished art journal, I can now hold accomplished pieces of art in my hands and figure out how to incorporate it into my own work. I can’t wait to stare at these pages and continue making art!

I met Tina Walker while I worked at Stampington in the marketing department. When Tina Walker proposed a four-way art journal swap, I accepted immediately!
The Genesis of Our Collaboration
My connection to Tina Walker dates back to my tenure at Stampington, where our mutual appreciation for mixed-media art laid the foundation for our collaboration. When Tina proposed a four-way art journal swap, I eagerly embraced the idea, anticipating the creative growth and inspiration it would foster.
Our Collaborative Process
The structure of our project was pretty straightforward and offered several happy arrivals in the mail to inspire along the way.
Here’s how it worked:
- Preparation of Backgrounds: Each artist began by crafting 12 unique art journal backgrounds, setting the stage for subsequent creative contributions.
- Sequential Contributions: We circulated our journals to the next person in the loop. Upon receiving a fellow artist’s journal, each of us added three art journal pages to the existing backgrounds.
- This process continued until every journal had traversed all four artists, culminating in a comprehensive and diverse collection of art. At the end, we each had an art journal of our own backgrounds, with amazing artwork from each artist!
Choosing the Right Canvas: The Cover
For my journal, I selected a scrapbook from Daiso, an economical yet quality choice at just $1.50. The sturdy kraft pages and durable cardboard cover provided an excellent foundation for mixed-media applications. I would love to eventually paint the front cover as well, although it has a simple design that doesn’t currently distract me too much. I usually don’t like spiral bound notebooks for art journals, because the spiral always gets bent along the way, but this one had a very narrow spine, so it didn’t get in the way while painting and the book lays flat! I highly recommend this notebook for the price and the amazing paper.
The Artistic Journey: Pages of Discovery
The pages that emerged from this collaboration were nothing short of mesmerizing. Each artist infused the journal with their distinct style, introducing vibrant colors and innovative designs that expanded my artistic perspective. These are the amazing pages made by Tina Walker, Andrea Chebeleu, and Jamie Dougherty. I can’t believe the amazing work that they returned to me. It was nothing like I expected, it was even better! I am still marveling at the bright paints and designs that aren’t part of my normal style.
One standout piece featured a mermaid with a map tail– a testament to the imaginative possibilities unlocked through collaborative efforts. Amazing!
